Creatives Garage releases 2025 femicide report based on Maskan national tour
Creatives Garage, in collaboration with Usikimye and Heinrich Boll Foundation Nairobi, has released a new report titled She did not die by accident: Mapping femicide in Kenya in 2025.
The report documents femicide cases recorded between January and December 2025 and draws from case reports, media coverage, civil society records, and qualitative evidence gathered through the MASKAN multi sensory installation and national tour.
Maskan toured Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu, and Mombasa, with community conversations held in each city. These engagements captured lived experiences, testimonies, and public dialogue on femicide, justice, and prevention.
Between January and March 2025 alone, at least 129 femicide cases were reported. Since March 2025, no consolidated national statistics have been publicly released, pointing to significant under reporting and weakened accountability.
The report finds that femicide in Kenya is systemic, patterned, and preventable. Most victims knew their perpetrators. Warning signs were present and ignored. Killings largely occurred in private spaces.
